Corn, of the basic food in Mexican diet and of many Latins in the United States, has become an important source for economical development. Therefore, different companies dedicated to the elaboration of products based on this grain have been created. However, because of its processes, the corn industry produces large quantities of waste water, consequently a set of norms have been set regulate the dumping of this waste water. The waste water of the head treatment under alkaline condition, called "nixtamalization" are commonly know as "nejayote" which has a pH above 11. The Biochemist Oxygen Demand (BOD) of nejayote was 12, 000 mg L-1 while the Chemist Oxygen Demand (COD) was 22, 000 mg L-1 which are considered very high. That is why the nejayote was subdued to an anaerobic reactor in order to lower its BOD and COD levels. An anerobic biodigestor of 8.8 L of volume work was used to evaluate the BOD and COD evolution when came out of biodigestor (effluent), the feeding of biodigestor (influent) was made of nejayote showing constant values of BOD and COD. Whit the average values got from the biodigestor the anaerobic treatment's performance was evaluated while the stabilization time process was measured according to the values of BOD and COD. The results obtained showed that the effectiveness of the anaerobic treatment was 96.8 % according to the lowering of the BOD and 87.5 % for the COD. Based on these outcomes, it was concluded that the aerobic treatment reduces the polluting effect. Besides, it is recommended to study different aspects in detail about this treatment because the advantages of the agroindustrial effluents have are characterized for containing a large quantity of organic material leading to treatments trough biological methods or as in this case, anaerobic treatments. |
