Summary: Las enfermedades de las plantas representan una grave amenaza para la producción de alimentos. Este volumen único proporciona el conocimiento fundamental y el uso práctico de Bacillus subtilis como prometedor agente de biocontrol. Para reemplazar los pesticidas químicos, una posibilidad son los pesticidas microbianos que utilizan microbios seguros. Bacillus subtilis es uno de varios candidatos. Aquí se presenta el cribado de la bacteria, la aplicación de pruebas en plantas, la aclaración de su mecanismo supresor frente a fitopatógenos y los aspectos de ingeniería de la producción de péptidos supresores. El autor ilustra cómo Bacillus subtilis es mucho más ventajoso que, por ejemplo, Pseudomonas en el biocontrol y puede considerarse un candidato útil.
