El Atlas de Barnes contiene una excelente combinación de los aspectos diagnósticos y experimentales de la fitopatología. Su tratamiento individual de cada enfermedad permite al profesor omitir algunos patógenos sin alterar la continuidad del libro. Mi curso de un semestre de Patología Forestal es principalmente descriptivo. Se hace especial hincapié en el reconocimiento de síntomas y signos en el campo. Esto se ve facilitado por la técnica de Barnes. En una secuencia de fotografías, la planta o parte enferma se observa primero en su conjunto para mostrar los síntomas generales. A esto suele seguir un primer plano de los signos.
